The characteristics most notable of this reserve are the jurasic era Monkey Puzzle trees (Araucaria araucana), the conical volcano and the Corralco ski centre.

Itinerary

Volcano Lonquimay at 2865m/9399 ft is an active volcano that is one of the most accessible for tourists. Arriving at your lodgings in Chile Wild cabins the night before, you will have time to enjoy the milk goat farm and the products they make on site. Other options at the tourist complex are their hidromasaje, sauna and massage service. In Malalcahuello there are thermal baths and several restaurants.

This ascent can be done all year. The volcano may be covered in snow and ice in winter which means that crampons and ice axe are required; in summer the ascent is made over hardened lava deposits without major implications apart from the steepness of the loose rocky slope.

From the summit one can look into a large crater and enjoy a 360 degree panorama of mountains, valleys and volcanoes.

The trip takes around 6 hours but that will depend on the climatic conditions, the fitness levels in the group and the experience of the participants.
