Dark sky cabins in Malalcahuello Chile

Dark sky escape Malalcahuello, Chile

Night sky escapes

If you live in a city, you will understand why the experience of a dark sky can be an escape. Our cities are so full of light pollution that often we´re not even aware what stage of the lunar cycle we are in. It takes an event such as an eclipse or a passing comet to remind us that interesting things can be observed in the sky at night. Malalcahuello is the perfect escape from the bustle and lights of Chilean cities.

Chile offers some of the best night sky viewing in the southern hemisphere. Observatories open to the public are located in the north of the country in the Atacama desert and include the Paranal, La Silla and Mamalluca observatories https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astronomy_in_Chile. Sometimes, however, we don´t need to be an astronomy enthusiast to be able to enjoy the night sky free of light pollution.

Why Malalcahuello for enjoying a dark sky?

If you’re looking for a peaceful, unforgettable escape in Chile, look no further than the night sky above Malalcahuello, Chile. Here, where the Andes meet ancient forests and volcanic peaks, you’ll find something rare: true darkness. Away from busy cities and artificial glare. Accommodation in Malalcahuello is becoming a favorite for travelers who want to reconnect with nature, the stars and themselves.

Malalcahuello sits within one of Chile’s lesser-known gems,  a region where protected natural landscapes and clear skies make for incredible celestial views. With little light pollution, the night opens up to reveal the Milky Way, Southern Cross and Magellanic Clouds.

Malalcahuello is situated between two active volcanoes (Llaima and Lonquimay) and two National Parks/Nature Reserves, Conguillío and Malalcahuello-Nalcas.  The area is famous for its ancient Endangered Monkey Puzzle tree forests. Along with the Magellanic Carpenter bird, other native wildlife may be spotted such as the cóndor, puma, Chilean fox and more. Malalcahuello is also close to Pucon, a popular tourist area but is much quieter than Pucon.

Cabins that let the night in

At Chile Wild cabins we operate with minimal, low impact exterior lighting so that guests can enjoy the Milky Way in all its splendour. On our 120 hectare (296 acres) Monkey Puzzle Tree conservation property guests can enjoy a guided sunset  walk within Conguillió National Park followed by a forest BBQ whilst enjoying the dark sky with no light pollution and returning to a comfortable cabin to sleep the rest of the night away. We have other dark night activities on site: an outdoor hidromassage, sauna and spring fed lagoon.

Our minimal lighting policy allows us to operate our goat milk farm with natural nocturnal pest control – nocturnal fauna such as owls and native foxes that help control vermin and bats to control insects. During the day the native Huron (Galictis cuja) and the neighbour´s semi wild cats form pest control duties.
