Should I learn how to ski or snowboard?
What is better to learn, ski or snowboard?
For someone who has never tried to ski or snowboard, this question is very important. The answer, however, is not so easy. If you are not clear which sport you should learn, my adivce would be to consider who you think you will be spending most time with on the slopes in the future and what do they do, ski or snowboard? Oftentimes you will be considering ski holidays with a group in which there are skiers and snowboarders, however, so here are some more pointers to help you decide:
Advantages of skiing
- Skiing is easier to learn as it requires a more natural body position and body movements. It is similar to walking, where you move your legs independently. Being easier to learn, there are usually less injuries and pain in the early learning stage.
- It´s easier to get on and off the chairlifts, T-bars and pommels.
- It´s easier to move across flat terrain as snowboarders have to take one foot out of the binding to push the board along or to crawl in an ungainly fashion to the next slope.
Advantages of snowboard
- Although it is more difficult to learn how to ride a snowboard, it´s said to be easier to improve from the basic level. </li
- The boots for snowboard are flexible and comfortable compared to ski boots.
- There is less damage to the legs, however, the ankles and upper body can get damaged.
- You can enjoy snowaparks doing fancy moves on half pipes and other structures. Se puede hacer cosas entretenidos en el snowpar
- For those who knjow how to ride a skateboard or surfboard, the body movements will come naturally.
- The feeling of liberty on a snowboard is like nothing else once you obtain it, although perhaps this a trait shared with skiing

What do you need to start?
- Rent good quality equipment. Normally you can rent on the ski slope. The prices may be higher than further away but perhaps the gear a little better maintained and updated.
- Helmet – a well fitting helmet is really necessary to reduce the risk of head injuries. You can rent them with your skiis.
- Gloves – are indispensible and it is recommendable to use a thinner inner pair of thermal gloves inside of the ski gloves to prevent your fingers freezing once the gloves get wet.
- Ski goggles – to protect from the UV, wind and cold
- Beanie – best made out of wool or thermal material to keep your head warm.
- Sunscreen – a strong sunscreen is required to block the reflective UV rays that bounce off the snow and it should be re-applied several times during the day.
The climate in the mountains can change dramatically in a matter or minutes so it is advisable to dress with layers of clothing that can be stripped off or added without much effort. En la montaña el clima puede cambiar rápidamente, entonces es bueno ir preparado con capas de ropa que se puede poner y sacar fácilmente durante el día.
The only other advice is to invest in lessons from the beginning to get yourself off to a good start. The instructors know the best ways to teach novices.
